Farrar with Spencer - I saw this combo three times last year but all three were a mix of Farrar/Spencer duo and Farrar/Spencer with bass and drums from the Varnaline guys on about half the songs. Spencer is a guitar virtuoso, just an incredible guitarist in my opinion, and he really shines on Jay's ...

I was told that too. In fact, I sent an e-mail to Soundscan once and they quoted me the price and it was ridiculous. It's not the kind of information a regular person who is just curious can get. And I think those sales figures in the earlier post are Amazon rankings and they change all the time any...

"The Truth"

I respect differing opinions, but one thing I can't stand is - whenever someone who says they used to love Jay but hate his solo work - they punctuate their opinion with "the truth hurts." Man, I hate that. Tell me your opinion and I'll tell you why I disagree with it, but don't tell me "the truth h...

"Smart pop Wilco style"

I found this interesting description of Jay in yesterday's Rocky Mountain News in the listing for last night's show with Yonder Mountain String Band. • Yonder Mountain String Band and Jay Farrar A little local bluegrass and smart pop Wilco style at the Paramount Theatre, 1621 Glenarm Place, 9 ...

I like Tennessee in the AFC. In the NFC, I think the Eagles will be hitting their stride in the playoffs although I say look out for Seattle. I don't think much of Carolina's quarterback but they have a great defense and great running game.

Review Critique

I'll start with what I think is wrong with your review besides just the fact that I disagree with most of your opinions, because a review can be critical of an artist I love and still be well done. But yours isn't so I'll try to explain why. First off, I'm bored by comparisons of Farrar and Tweedy/W...

"Superior achievements .. unnoticed by the masses"

I ran across this line in a Dallas Morning News column about the Atlanta Braves not getting their due for 12 straight division titles: "Their superior achievements don't simply go unnoticed by the masses like, say, the novels of Richard Powers or the music of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt." Guess I'll h...

Non-music place, there's a bar called Corner Bistro at 8th Avenue and W. 4th Street that has awesome burgers and good cheap beer (cheap by NYC standards). The wait for a table can be long though. But it's a cool bar with good eats. If you want to see stand-up comedy I like the Comedy Cellar on MacDo...
