Gotta be something new recorded
It's been well over 2 years since Honky Tonk was recorded. I have to believe Jay and at least some of the boys have been in the studio working on something new during that time. On the other hand, he hasn't been rolling out new songs in the duo shows. But it seems like something new is coming. I wis...

The ode to Crazy Horse predates Son Volt--Jay's Neil guitar and Mike's Ralph drums are nowhere as pronounced as on UT's Looking For a Way Out. I've played that opening for a bunch of Rusties, and they're shocked when Jay's voice kicks in (fully expecting this to be some unreleased Crazy Horse record...

Of all the possible (and realistic) collaborations I can imagine Jay doing, a band with Gary Louris is the one I'd love to see. Their writing sensibilities, voices, and guitar playing just seem so complementary. Let's see, while I'm at it I guess Jim Boquist would logically be their bass player. As ...

Honky Tonk
Yeah, I guess I didn't really answer the question. I listened to the album (vinyl) all the way through yesterday. It's a classic--solid songs, memorable choruses, and beautiful playing and singing throughout. There are a few songs where a female harmony voice would fit right in--unusual in Jay's cat...

Angel of the Blues
Post #1: Last summer at a book signing the night of a Son Volt show I asked Jay if he'd consider adding Angel of the Blues to the setlist. He nodded and said maybe. I mentioned that it's a great song, but very sad, and he looked down and said "yes it is". I get the impression that it's unusually per...
