I listen to this song more than any other, usually the Austin City Limits version. The whole band is just sympatico with Jay on this, especially the magician that is Eric Heywood. I thin this and Angel of the Blues are companion pieces. I wish he would play them! Maybe just too sad.

Gotta be something new recorded

It's been well over 2 years since Honky Tonk was recorded. I have to believe Jay and at least some of the boys have been in the studio working on something new during that time. On the other hand, he hasn't been rolling out new songs in the duo shows. But it seems like something new is coming. I wis...

Anybody who attended have a mini review you'd like to share? Anything new in the setlist? Did Jay and Rhett play together at all?

I would love to see a Jay/Gary show with that City Winery setlist! And yes, I've seen them before. Jay seems a lot like Neil Young--he doesn't really care what the audience wants--which is part of what makes them both great artists.

Interesting pairing. Musically a good fit, but incredibly different approaches to audience interaction. I wonder if they've ever done anything together before, and if not how this came about. Hope it comes out west, although Rhett is doing a variety show thing in SF this week.

The ode to Crazy Horse predates Son Volt--Jay's Neil guitar and Mike's Ralph drums are nowhere as pronounced as on UT's Looking For a Way Out. I've played that opening for a bunch of Rusties, and they're shocked when Jay's voice kicks in (fully expecting this to be some unreleased Crazy Horse record...

I'll bet Jay and Jeff are secretly best friends, vacation together in Mexico with their families, and go to Mike's house and play every other Tuesday night. They probably have 9 or 10 unreleased albums in the can.

Of all the possible (and realistic) collaborations I can imagine Jay doing, a band with Gary Louris is the one I'd love to see. Their writing sensibilities, voices, and guitar playing just seem so complementary. Let's see, while I'm at it I guess Jim Boquist would logically be their bass player. As ...

Honky Tonk

Yeah, I guess I didn't really answer the question. I listened to the album (vinyl) all the way through yesterday. It's a classic--solid songs, memorable choruses, and beautiful playing and singing throughout. There are a few songs where a female harmony voice would fit right in--unusual in Jay's cat...

Angel of the Blues

Post #1: Last summer at a book signing the night of a Son Volt show I asked Jay if he'd consider adding Angel of the Blues to the setlist. He nodded and said maybe. I mentioned that it's a great song, but very sad, and he looked down and said "yes it is". I get the impression that it's unusually per...
