Maybe, rather than Jay having a "shit day," he rightly took issue with you throwing the word "gay" around. I know I would have. It probably had very little to do with the fact that you mentioned Tweedy. Just that you have the lack of tact and social consciousness to toss around offensive language......

At the Chattanooga show last Saturday, Jay mumbled something about his music for the Kerouac documentary, saying that it "appeared that it was going to be a full record." I can only assume that this means he's written a full batch of tunes for the project rather than just a few. It sure would be nic...

Dust of Daylight repeats "fourth of July" and I can't wait to hear the official version. I heard the other 3, but too muddy in my ears to get a feel. Actually, it is "Dynamite" that repeats "Fourth of July." The main line of the chorus is "This love is like celebrating the Fourth of July with dynam...

Calling Birmingham experts
Hello folks, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent hotel (not pricey by any means but not a roach motel either) nearby the WorkPlay Theater in Birmingham... A group of friends and I are headed up for the Ben Kweller show on March 6 and are looking for a place to crash, preferably within...

Yeah, you just need to dig into his back catalogue. Ben has long had a pop sensibility about him. His last record, self-titled, is full of fantastic writing with much more of a Jayhawks-style instrumentation and production style. This is his first country outing. As a 16-year-old, he was in a band c...

Ben Kweller -- Album of this young year, hands down
For those of you who ache for a little Gram Parsons-style country rock (and who the hell here doesn't?), you need to pick up Ben Kweller's new disc "Changing Horses." It is full of beautiful melodies, wailing pedal steels, and excellent writing -- all in the vain of Gram. If you'd like a listen, che...

Here are the lyrics to James McMurtry's "Ruby & Carlos" for those who haven't heard it. If you haven't heard it and are a sucker for Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and the like, I strongly recommend you seek it out... James McMurtry -- Ruby & Carlos Ruby said "You're gettin' us in a world of hurt. Dow...

Yeah, I remember Son Volt playing this one couched between two halves of "Chickamauga." It's actually one of the more "rock star" moments for Jay in my memory -- playing "Chick," breaking into the Iggy tune, going to encore, and then dramatically coming back onto stage only to break back into "Chick...

Thanks for mentioning this. You should all DEFINITELY check this text out. The inclusion of Aaron Smithers' article "Old Time Punk" is a wonderful addition to this book. Aaron is a fantastic scholar and friend who I have had the joy of working alongside in the Curriculum in Folklore at the Universit...
