Keeping Walbourne

Count me amongst those who hope JW becomes a permanent member of the band. SV needs a lead guitarist with energy and presence--they've already got 4 mellow, cerebral dudes--one more, as with Masterson--and they morph into a soporific alt-country parody act (see Cowboy Junkies). Jay recognized this during recent near-ruinous tour with aforementioned lounge lizards and made the right call to inject some dynamism back into the band.

So do I, and of course since I'm not exactly on birthday cards terms with Mr. Walbourne, I might be mistaken. Maybe we should check the CBS news feed or the local bar one more time before we draw our conclusions?Antelope850 wrote:Walbourne sure drinks a lot of beer.Dr. Zapatos wrote: Last time I had a beer with him, he was a few years younger than me, and now he's the same age as me?
When he toured with Son Volt in 2005, the London reviews called him 24-year-old James Walbourne.

You're gonna make me sing with all those guitar players?Neverwonagrammy wrote:This just in...
Since Jay is leaving to hook up with Esteban, Son Volt have reformed as a vocal quartet, very similar in style to The Oak Ridge Boys.
The singers are Brad Rice, James Walbourne, Dave Boquist, and Mark Spencer.
I believe Chris Frame will be playing guitar, but, it may be Mike Heidorn.
I know, for a fact, Mike played guitar on their version of "I've Been Workin' On The Railroad".
The good news is, Jeff Tweedy produced their album, due out sometime in 2010.
Not sure if DuPlantis is with 'em or not.
Exciting times 'round here, for sure...

Imo, the musical chemistry was best with Boquist. Having said that, communicating through lawyers is a shitty thing to do, especially since Warners originally wanted a Jay solo and Jay chose to form a band.
Duplantis is the best of the bass players. his right hand attack is powerful, and he is overall a better player.
Rice comes off as a whore who found a better gig. he'd play with Kanye if paid enough
Had high hopes for Masterson. sorry to see him go
Frame is inconsequential and a total lack of feel
The English guy does a respectable job, but the Pretenders is a better fit

I heard that, on Mark Spencer's recommendation, Jay is firing the whole band, and touring from now on, as a duo, with Esteban.
They have a new "QVC Only" album comin' out this summer, along with a Farrar/Esteban, Bonanzinga licensed, custom guitar, with built in electronics, made of genuine "fine hardwoods", with matching 10 watt mini-amp.
Only 25,000 will be produced, and they're gonna have an introductory price of $249.99.
Comes with a lesson book that teaches you easy fingering versions of "Windfall" and "LaBamba"...
