a possible case of a mondegreen.

Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands,
Oh, where hae ye been?
They hae slain the Earl O' Moray,
And Lady Mondegreen.
The actual fourth line is "And laid him on the green". Wright explained the need for a new term: "The point about what I shall hereafter call mondegreens, since no one else has thought up a word for them, is that they are better than the original."

Yep, one of many brilliant stars in the constellation called "The Milky Jay" (just made that up, and I'm damn proud of it, frankly). And yes, it's "Pattern doesn't mend, fixtures fall from their base."

While "Left a Slide" is a fine Jay Farrar song ... I'm sure you'll find that some here will "doubt" whether or not it's Farrar's "finest moment".

(I have no insight as to the proper lyric there ... sorry ... I rank very low on the "lyric-figure-outer" scale).

Left a Slide Lyrics?

Post by thegimmer »

A question for all you Farrar Fans across the land.

What is Jay singing in the first line of Left a Slide?

The consenses on all of the lyric websites (I know, I know they are wrong as many times as they are right) is "Pattern doesn't match, pictures fall from their base"? O.K.... that lyric is very nice and makes perfect sense other than the fact that it does not sound like he says "match" to me. I have listened to numerous live versions and the recorded version and each time he kinda mumbles that word. It sounds to me like he is saying "Pattern doesn't mend, pictures fall from their base". Anyone want to back me up on this?

I have never been very good at lyrics and have been found quilty many times of inserting the wrong words into tunes but I just can't accept that he is saying "match".

Please send your opionions, thank you.

P.S. There is no doubt that "Left a Slide" is Jay's finest moment.
