ooopsy. i'm not a big fan of imprecise
credits, specially for something that
includes a lot of details. i like thorough
and clear recording credits....giving credit
where it's due.

Spencer, you got some general credit for
recording in New York and a musician credit but
thats all we know from the liner. Sorry :(

i was hoping you could share some additional info
about your contributions and maybe some other
important details. i've looked through the booklet
many times and hoped i just missed it. i'm not sure
why details are overlooked on projects like this.
seems silly to leave it to ambiguity. im the dork that
wants to know what gear and beer was used etc...
at least we know Jay uses D'Addario strings...now is
that phosphor wound, nickel, or flat?

Argh. Now I don't want to open my copy and look at the credits.

i wish there was more in the liner notes about
where and with whom songs where recorded, but
the ability to render songs very close to album version
live, might also suggest studio sessions with all
artists' present.
The session at my studio (Tape Kitchen) was all four guys and myself for 10 or 11 days. Does it not indicate what was recorded where on the record? I haven't seen the credits yet.
thats great to know! people were making
assumptions that the artist's were recording
seperately. you can't really tell by the notes
wether they recorded as a unit or not for
each song. ears were picking up differences
in recording styles between songs and brains
were determining that artists were too busy
to woodshed and record together.

i'm interested to know which songs were
done at the Tape Kitchen? Thanks Mark!

"To create "New Multitudes," each of the songwriters selected their own pieces to work on and then brought the completed song to the group to record. "

this seems to suggest Jay, Anders, Will, and
Yim recorded together for New Multitudes.
i wish there was more in the liner notes about
where and with whom songs where recorded, but
the ability to render songs very close to album version
live, might also suggest studio sessions with all
artists' present. one observation, as an
internet viewer relating to this aspect, is the vocal
harmonies during Yim's contribution at the Ameboa.
another, the ability to rock these songs the fuck out

Very interesting write-ups. I think the spinner interviewer must not have heard the second disc, though. "Optimistic" is certainly not something that comes to mind after hearing San Antone Meat House or Jake Walk Blues or Dope Fiend Robber or.....

So the back story is finally told. Yes, very classy. I guess it was going to Billy Bragg in any event.

Funny stuff on the Yim Yames thing!

Nice to have clarification, and kudos to Jay for handling the question so well:

"The backstory is that going back to 1995, 1996, there was a request that came through Warner Bros. for Son Volt to work with Woody Guthrie's lyrics and to work with Billy Bragg. Son Volt was on tour at the time, so that didn't happen, but that's when the idea took root for me. I knew that it was something that I wanted to do. As far as seeking out the project that Billy Bragg and Wilco did, I never did seek it out. I wanted to be sure that when I did work with Woody Guthrie lyrics that I had a clean canvas to work with and not be influenced to either do something a certain way or not do something a certain way based on what they had done. I didn't harbor any illusions that there would not be comparisons."
