Cliffs of antique ain't got no rose
The mornings seen the ledder pose
Say thanks to foggy moon
Except when tumble boom

Soon and sand crookbird back
Long and short, low and easy
See round, see the end of me?
Too find the other side of flat

O we wait too for heaven -- all in one
I'm gonna wash old Pavia down
And pack my salt to another town

How sweet the earth yells sand
All there is in fair and sight
Whose plantation Neptune got
That of Atlas still down there

Rough old hands played out pedigree
Sunk more boats than dreamers'll ever see
The world is burning and needs water
I'll have a daughter wait and see

O we wait too for heaven -- all in one
I'm gonna wash old Pavia down
And pack my salt to another town
O we wait too for heaven -- all in one
I'm gonna wash Fujiyama down
And pack my salt to another town

The first time I heard this tune was a live version (NPR I think?) where you could really hear Jay's harmonies. My first thought was "this is what Uncle Tupelo circa Anodyne era, would have sounded like if Ben Gibbard stepped in for Tweeedy."

Great frickin tune!

All the words are directly from Kerouac's book, 'Big Sur.' If I can find the time, I'll flip through the book and post the lyrics, but it'll take some time to track all the words down. Anybody else more familiar with the book (I've only read it once) who can post the lyrics?

I would also love to hear Jay do this one, which certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility seeing as how he composed it.

One of my favorite tracks on "One Fast Move". Imagine Son Volt playing it...it'd be a real barn-burner. Any hot shot word smiths out there can figure out the lyrics? These are my guess...

cliffs of antique aint got no rose
the morning seen the letter pose
say thanks to foggy moon
except when tumble boom

soon and sand crook bird bat
long and short low and easy
see around to see the end of me
find the other side of flat

or wait too for heaven
all in one
gonna wash old (?) down
pack my salt to another town

how sweet the earth yells sand
all there is in fair in sight
whose plantation neptune got
that of atlas still down there

rough old hands played out pedigree
sunk more boats than dreamers will ever see
the world is burning and needs water
i'll have a daughter wait and see

or wait too for heaven
all in one
gonna wash old (?) down
pack my salt to another town

or wait too for heaven
all in one
gonna wash fugiyama down
pack my salt to another town
