Its all good Tim! Can't say it enough about Fat Possum and JK. I have a Hezzakiah Lee and Paul Young album that I listen too a bit. I loaned a T-Model Ford out to a friend. I think everything on Fat Possum is worth looking into.turpentim wrote:turpentim wrote:By the way, Junior Kimbrough's "first recordings" are actually an album by the same name -- First Recordings. This quote could illuminate on the direction:
“Recently, I’ve been getting really into Junior Kimbrough’s first recordings, if that tells you where my head is at right now.”

Hezzakiah has some wonderful rollicking distorted blues in the vein of
Mississippi juke joints.
thanks, I'm going to find a copy! I can't get enough of JK, kicking myself for never checking him out, I always saw his name on the Fat Possum roster, but never dabbled, now I'm a convert!
Who else does a good 3 piece blues (guitar, bass, drum) in the same vein? Anyone with recommendations?
I have to be honest, when Jay went with Honky Tonk, I dove head first and went down the rabbit hole of all that Bakersfield stuff, so glad I did too.

Who is Son Volt 3.0?
Interesting to speculate--too bad Jay didn't mention it in the interview. Logic says it's Jay on guitar, Andrew on bass, Dave on drums. But, Jay has done everything the last 3 years with Gary (Honky Tonk, duo and trio shows). Maybe Spencer on bass? And there's that other drummer nearby. Fun (but pointless) to speculate.
In any case, I think we might have Chickamauga Jay this time. Or not. I do think the energy he has gained from playing some "power trio" (as he himself described it) rock and roll shows up in the latest acoustic shows.
