Shouldn't Townes Van Zandt be prominently displayed on this list?

That's a tough list to make without leaving off some fine albums. Surprised nobody has mentioned Cracker. Their S/T and Kerosene Hat brought a good amount of attention to the genre.

Oh! So this is the album with Down by the Water. I think that was someone's year end best, part of the board comp. That's the one song I was familiar with (and really liked).

(Once again, the year end comps from this board are the best. )

Yeah, that was another predicament -- one that has been openly acknowledged since folks started labeling stuff "alt-country". Just what the hell is it? Better yet, what ISN'T it?

To my ears, The Decemberists' "The King Is Dead" is a powerful example of Americana. I'm with you that most of their material is not in any way alt-country, but that record is without question, IMO. Others on my list that raise similar questions include The Lemonheads' record 'Come On Feel the Lemonheads.' I actually had go back and listen to it to decide if it belonged in this list. My ears told me unquestionably so; if Wilco's 'Being There' is alt-country then 'Come on Feel the Lemonheads' certainly is too.

Another predicament... Is Neil Young alt-country? Bruce Springsteen? Tom Petty? If so, certainly a bunch of their records would qualify for such a list. If not, why not? Because their music pre-dates the label? Seems odd.

Suffice it to say that this is not an easy task. And there are SO many great records that must be considered. No list can ever be truly comprehensive, let alone exhaustive.

Am listening to The King is Dead right now. Ok, you are absolutely correct! I stand corrected.

Yeah, the genre thing is a difficult one. Oftentimes it's whatever was initially tagged.

A very good, comprehensive list. As always, I'll check out what I'm unfamiliar with.

Some on here don't strike me as alt-country:for instance The Decemberists.

You're way ahead of me in terms of knowing your stuff but one recent discovery for me: Cary Hudson "Town and Country" (ex-Blue Mountain).

Yes, Just Add Ice was the one that I meant to include in my honorable mentions, not Sooner or Later. Great, great record. 50 just ain't enough :)
