"Hoping Machine" is easily in the Top Ten of any song that Jay Farrar is a part of, and I listen to dozens (UT, SV, solo projects, Gob Iron) regularly.
I like that Jay found the words to Hoping Machine in one of Woody Guthrie's journals, just some musings he wrote down that Jay turned into lyrics, as opposed to a song Woody wrote.

Hoping Machine is a song that has really grown on me and has aged well. It's an unusual song, I think, and initially I really didn't know what to make of it. But, yes, I agree with your sentiment.
