The movie Cash Crop has a scene in a bar where "Back into your world" is playing on the jukebox.

Biff used Jay's music on Letterman

Post by Murphy »

For those of you looking to hear Jay's music on mainstream television, you might be interested to know that a couple of clips were used on Biff Henderson's segment from Letterman (where Biff takes an RV tour of America). It was actually a pretty funny segment that they ran in installations for a while there--hell, maybe it is a regular part of the show, I don't know. The tunes were a pretty good backdrop for some decent footage of america from the road--very 'lookin at the world through a windshield'-esque. Of course, I didn't them give Jay any credit for it....

I really don't have a problem with someone like Jay or the Flaming Lips allowing their songs to be used in commercials. However, I'm not sure about more financially successful artists doing it. Does Led Zepplin or the Stones really need that extra cash they get from Cadillac and Microsoft? I know that sounds like a double standard but it's just the way I feel.

Sell Out

Post by Hank Snow »

I look up music all the time from commercials, you discover a lot of great stuff that way. Like someone said up above, selling out is doing exactly what the suits tell you to do to ensure big sales, big pay check, etc. Allowing your song to be used on a commerical is not selling out. Plus Chanty is one heck of a neat song isn't it? And VWs are awesome and their advertising always tends to be very artistic, so it's a good fit.

Whoever mentioned Clay Aiken earlier, please don't ever do that again. I had to go vomit.

Getting Warmer

Post by cowboydown »

I wonder who approached who for the Volkswagen "Getting Warmer" commercial? I nearly died from excitement hearing Chanty on the tee-vee... long live Jay Farrar and his music.

I would only be pissed off if I found out I couldn't really get from Aspen to Phoenix on one tank!

no crime

Post by countryBoy »

Having your song in a commercial is not a crime. What is laughable is that the ad guys for these companies believe music can sell their shit. Jay must like VW's because he allowed his song to be used or our company is so cool this is what we play in our elevators. Fuck off Madison Ave.

Well, its cool that some of Jay's tops fans are into it. I was suprised by the commercial, but I was never quite sure what I thought about it. I have a more positive view of it from reading some of these posts.

Jay is the best contemporary American songwriter in my opinion. He's solo albums have shown a brighter attention to musicality which has taken to the next level. Given his age, his impressive resume, and his constant evolution (we're a long way from Factory Belt), the next 10 years will probably produce 4 or 5 of the most exciting and progressive albums in American roots music.

I think the difference here is that this is a very, very cool commercial that is an art piece in and of itself.

It's the best commercial I have ever seen, really.

Son Volt and Jay deserve to sell a heck of alot more records than tey did/do, and I see nothing wrong with trying to pay a few bills in this situation. The commercial is like watching art.

rgk...

you never know

it was a 30 second commercial (another VW commercial)

that led me to investigate Nick Drake

The commercial and urging from friends to check out his music gave me a new artist to enjoy.

I may be in the minority

but, especially in the last 5 years or so...

I've found myself pretty curious about who sang/performed/wrote "that song from that one commercial"

you never know what you'll find and how you'll find it

there's always those diamonds in the rough

maybe some couch potato will find Jay Farrar is their diamond after watching that commercial

it could happen

I hope Jay gets a few new fans from this but something tells me nobody will know it's his music except for all of us.

Would someone really look up music they heard on a 30-second commercial?

I can't imagine doing that.

Hopefully that paycheck was a good one.

NoFupa wrote:i hate when people get mad at someone like jay for allowing his song to played on a show or commercial. thats not selling out. selling out is when you put no heart into what you do, and instead just do what you know will sell. when jay sits in front of a record exec, and the exec says i want your song to sound just like this. then when jay does exactyl that and goes on to have his first platinum record you can call him a sellout

if the producer of a UPN or FOX show(That OC one for example) calls jay and said he really liked the song heart on the ground and would like to put it in the show. if im jay, i say sure and cash my check. and who knows, maybe someone kid who just bought the clay aiken single hears it and says to himself, damn this is really good. what the hell did i just buy. i need to find out more about who wrote this song and other artists like him. screw the shit that ive been listening to.
Well said. If folks want to look at this as selling-out to commercialism then, taking that point to it's logical conclusion, Jay and Dylan and Springsteen and EVERYONE that ever released and album that wasn't free of charge is a sell-out to commercialism. He gets paid when we buy one of his albums, why shouldn't he get paid when VW puts a song of his in a commercial. To further delineate between "It's okay for 30 secs in a commercial, but not if it is Dawson's Creek" seems bizarre to me.

For those who have yet to see the aforementioned VW ad ... here's a link to their "commercials" page ...

The commercial called "Getting Warmer" is the one you're looking for.

enjoy,
