This thread reminded me....

A couple years ago after an outdoor show in Chicago:

my drunk friend: "Hey Jay, will you take a picture with us?"

Jay: "That's not really my thing."

Us the rest of the weekend: "God damn it, we should have known that wasn't his thing!!!"

We decided we would've stopped liking Jay if he would have let us (drunk douche-bags acting like 12-year old girls) take a picture with him...

As far the sports thing goes, wasn't Straightaways named after the part of
a racetrack where you can relax before the turns? This was in an interview
many years back and briefly brought up in the HBO Reverb show. So I'm
thinking Jay was a fan of motorsports, at least for awhile.

would it be safe to assume Mr. Farrar is a Blues fan then? (Blues) being the hockey franchise in St. Louis.

I spoke for a moment with him while he was singing some flyers for me once, tho there wasn’t much of a conversation. I’d said they were for friends (which I give them all away ‘cept for one for myself) and he commented I must have a lot of friends, and I mentioned that I hadn’t noticed how many I’d picked up.

For some reason I mentioned Steve Earle and he asked if I what I thought of his new album. I’d only heard it like a weak before and never give it a through listen, so at the moment I didn’t really care for it - I thought it was a little too aggressive in its politics (which I happen to agree with) and the poem seemed a little pretentious (seems to start out ok but then becomes illogical?)- I commented therefore I loved Steve Earle but it come off sophomoric, which kinda slipped out and I tried to explain what I meant…. He said he understood. There was an interview later that month in which he commented about how sometimes it’s a turn off the way artist’s can be too in your face with their politics and that he prefers to be more subtle. Not sure how he put it or what else was said. He seems pretty quiet. As for me, I was rambling incomprehensively, I’m sure.

When I saw Son Volt in 1998, I was at the front of the stage leaning against Jay's acoustic amp he was using as a monitor and he looked down, smiled a bit the following was spoken:

"Can I have my amp back for a second?"

"Oh yeah man, sorry."

"It's cool, you can lean on it."

"Is it cool if I use flash?" (I had my camera)

"Yeah, I play with my eyes closed anyway."

Then he just used hand gestures the rest of the night when he needed to use the amp.

I interviewed Jay years later, but this was cool for me since everyone was like "Jay Farrar doesn't speak! I heard he killed a kid in Memphis because he blink while making eye contact with him! Also, he beat up a soundman in Kansas who asked him to speak up!!"

Okay, it wasn't that bad, but they were all shocked he spoke to me.

Austin in '03
Me: Man I really enjoy your work.
JF: Thanks
Me: Who is that guy from Canyon, he gets really crazy onstage
JF: Oh you mean brandon.

Talahassee '04
Me: Man really enjoyed the show. My daughter and I were in Destin and it was really boring, so we drove up to see you.
JF: Man, thanks, how far a drive is that?
Me: Oh just a couple of hours
JF: Allright man.

These are moments I cherish forever.
