That's too much work!sturgeongeneral wrote:I described this "genre" of music as Americana roots music. Of course, that description needs defining to many people. When someone asks me what I listen to, I'll mumble something like, "alt.country" or "Americana". When they inevitably say What? I sigh and say, "Country. I listen to country. But it's not the country you can listen to on the radio."
They've invariably lost interest by then, but leave with the vague idea that I listen to Cowboy Troy.
OH, AND CONGRATS, GRAINPULP!!! YOU RULE MY ASS!

This is an interesting thread. Just today, I was discussing the type of music that I listen to with a guy who plays in a Beatles cover band. He had never heard of UT, SV, JF, etc. I was telling him about the Old Crow Medicine Show concert that I attended last night. I described this "genre" of music as Americana roots music. Of course, that description needs defining to many people. So, I discussed the use of traditional instruments such as fiddles, pedal steel, harmonicas, and the emphasis on acoustic instrumentation. I also explained the taking of older music and changing the rhythm and timing patterns to provide it with a more contemporary and urgent feel.
I am sure the above description does not begin to explain the type of music I enjoy but it is a start.
