One of my favorites is from 15 Keys:

"Danger slow says the sign ahead
Exhaust fumes, Thin Lizzy instead."

also

"We're all living proof that nothing lasts."

"Forward and on we go, building our mounds out of control. Full of our finest throw away things."

From Cahokian.

"There was a time
You could put it out of your mind
And leave it all behind
There was a time
And that time is gone"

quite possibly the best collaboration of words ever assembled into one sentance.

end of discusion.

All of I Got Drunk is classic UT lyrics:

"I took the bottle and poured me a shot
And thought of all the things that I haven't got
And I drank that down and pour me some more
Kept pourin and drinkin til I felt the floor"

Great stuff!

Criminals - quite a contribution for Heidorn to make, wouldn't you say? I actually wasn't sure specifically who came up with that line but I had that song playing in the car and I thought it'd be perfect for this discussion. Great song, great line.

Ahhh yes, the Dude. Well Dude, this aggresion towards TB will not stand - man.

Allow me to point out all of Hanging Onto You. Every verse is great.

"Target practice at the heart
False starts and faded parts
Knew the lines, but we couldn't make it last

So all there is to do . . .
Hanging on to you is all I can dooooooo"

What about:

" . . . until the winds of change, change us all" from All Your Might (there some real good stuff before this line that I can't recall off the top of my head, any help here?)

I think that Terrior Blues doesn't have the lyrics stand out like most of Jay's other stuff. But that doesn't mean it isn't as strong, it just takes some effort to hear the lines, and the lines are fantastic in my opinion.

I got drunk... too funny, but actually I read an article somewhere that said Mike Heidorn came up with that line. That was his sole contribution to U.T. lyricism.

P.S. gumbopages has to be wrong on "Route".... that line obviously has to be saying "mother road".... Those lyrics are built for that usage. Otherwise, I'll lose a tad respect for a great song with Jay using a mundane line like "another road etc.".

Also, does anybody else think that Jay's lyrics kinda went to shit on TB? Not all of the words stink, but lyrically, I think the album is one of his worst, including UT days. (I like "Hard is the Fall" though.)

I've got to say that my favorite Farrar lyrics are in Tear-Stained Eye and Barstow, especially Barstow. I totally agree with those that say that song is chock full of good lines, but the best is undoubtedly,

"The Devil bought the keys to Branson,
Drives a backhoe and wears a gold chain."

I know I'm only repeating what others have already said, but it's good to know that you all appreciate these great lyrics too.

seeing traces of the stars that came before

(regardless of what jay meant, this will always bring to my mind
the image of starlight finally reaching the earth from stars that no
longer exist)

i can see the sand, and it's runnin' out

Took a break to get that far
Like the sound of a hundred dollar guitar
Bought from an old catalog
Yesterday's dust and heartache

From "Catching On"

If learning is living and the truth is a state of mind you'll find it's better at the end of the line...

This trickle down theory has left all these pockets empty...

"they pay to move it off the shelf and into our minds, till you can't tell the truth when it's right in front of your eyes." - still be around
