Straightaways was the first SV album I bought. I got a Patty Smith CD and something else I don't remember at the same time. It was a real luxury -- I was making $7.00 an hour at the time, IIRC.

The band's sound and Jay's songs made me an instant convert. Son Volt has been my favorite band ever since... though I admit I still miss the Boquist-Boquist-Heidorn iteration.

Maybe it's because I grew up in a similar place at the same time. Maybe Jay is just channeling those songs up from the earth. Americana filtered though alternative (these categories are just crude descriptions, but I need them at the moment) just works for me.

So, yeah, Picking up the Signal.

By the thinnest of margins -- Punch Drunk.

This one was really tough. Probably the closest top three so far.

Punch Drunk, Postcard and Picking Up the Signal.

I think Jay's voice is at its finest moment in Postcard. "nothing hear to stand onnnnn..." Go listen, it sends shivers down my spine.

"postcard" embodies tupelo at their most daring for me, pulling off really risky stop/starts and vibe changes. also, farrar is on top of the world lyrically.

Didn't I say that earlier? That's the best part of the song right there.

picking up the signal. the transition from endless war to p.u.t.s. is one of my all time jay highlights. jay changes guitars and is already playing the intro before he turns around.
