FWIW.. recenty a co-worker mentioned lossless format on iTunes store so it may be available these days.

 Color me sucker! Hilarious. I'd couldn't give two hoots in hell about format but then I live in a pod, floating in a nutrient-enriched saline solution and think that the world is grand.

exactly. that is why i have a creative mp3 player and not an uber cool ipod and will never have an ipod even though they do have some pretty cool accessories/features etc.

i figure that if i buy the song i should be able to do whatever the bleep i want to with it.

son volt made it available on 3 formats:

itunes = not gonna happen
rhapsody = subscription service = not gonna happen
sonyconnect = thought i'd give it a try = had to download sonicstage just to buy it which pissed me off and now i have this song that i can't play or convert

does anyone know if rhapsody can be used without signing up for a subscription? and if so, what file format does it use?

cheers,

b
I understand your position completely bwhite0421...I don't even have an MP3 player and have no interest in Itunes, unless it was to offer full fidelity FLAC downloads. MP3 and the like is for suckers. BTW did you read the TOS on the Sonyconnect site....might as well just give sony a key to your PC's back door (literally!). I'd stay as far away from that shit as I could.
It says you can burn it to CD...That's what I would do, then re-rip it to lo-fi wav and do whatever you want with it...after doing a system restore to remove that Sony software!
I have ALL Jays stuff but have yet to hear the Expanded "Search" or complete "Hello Goodbye" ...and I ain't going back to vinyl!

Read the Sonyconnect TOS and you will see why the record labels would actually like to see the (unprotected) CD die off and would rather sell you inferior, protected, or watermarked lo-fi digital downloads.

If "On Chant and Strum", and "Hello Goodbye" is ever released on CD, weather a promo or Jap import, compilation etc...I would not rest till I have it...but I ain't doin itunes or buying vinyl... even if it means I have to wait for "Son Volt Anthology Vol 2".

I have yet to see SV on the current tour, mostly due to schedule conflicts, but partially due to dissapointment over the exclusives Itunes release. Maybe Jay should release his next album on 8-track tape only!

BTW...if anybody will send me a CDR rip of the expanded 22 track "Search", and a 1 track CDR of "Hello Goodbye", I would gladly sent "YOU" $10.00.

End of rant,

Roqdawg

Once ripped, it catalogs by song title, album, artist, year of release, genre, etc. It will even add the album art into the songs if you tell it to. Again, all free.
The only time you pay is if you want to download and album, song, whatever. Yes, it is generally their proprietary AAC format, but you can burn the CD, then re-rip the CD into whatever format you want. I think with some of the new stuff there you may be able to skip the burn and convert method as they have fewer rights restrictions now on some stuff.
All podcasts are free as well and you do not have to own an ipod to listen to podcasts as they are mp3s.
So if you have a few Meg to devote to downloading Itunes, it really is not the death of your street cred, it merely organizes and catalogs your existing collection with the added benefit of being able to browse their store for songs to buy or Podcasts to get free.
Agreed on all points.

And you can right-click your songs in Itunes and “convert to mp3” if you want; well - I don't know about the PC downloadable interface, but on the Mac, it's so easy that one would have to really struggle to screw it up.

There really (in my experience) is no easier way to deal with downloading / cataloging music, making playlists, burning CD's, ripping existing CD's, etc... And you’re right, even if you’re a PC user – it’s a free download and there is zero commitment. Hard to bitch about that, really. Especially considering what you're exposed to, and how easy it is to use.

I have nothing bad to say about iTunes, other than they’ve pretty much single handedly destroyed store-front record stores, but really … that was bound to happen, wasn’t it? Technology keeps on barreling forward with no regard for the casualties in it’s wake. So it goes.

VCR, seriously dude....it works for me anyway. I really should get a digital recorder but I really don't see the need for it when I only ever tape a couple of things I might miss.

I don't know how many times I have to tell you folks that I have oil derricks in my front yard spewing money all over the place, what's the big deal?

i'm sure like i said if i had ever had a mac i'd be on the other side and i'm like you i can't keep track of what's cool and what's not anymore i just go with what i like.

heck i like son volt and always have and as of yet i don't think that has or ever will fall into the 'cool' realm of the world. now that other band that starts with a W----, i'm sure there are some of their fanbase that just got on the bus but heck at least they are on the bus.

cheers,

I believe in the “Do whatever fits you” theory, too.

I’m so over trying to keep up with "cool", I just happen to naturally like cool stuff.

Like Son Volt.

If you own Apple stock, you care.

Otherwise, yeah - I agree.

VCR, really? Do they still make VCR tapes, or are they vintage purchases off eBay or something?

I wouldn't give two god damns about where I got the music I wanted as long as I did get it. Jobs, Gates...who cares? Make the choice about music not corporations.

I have had an iPod and that was ok and I now have a Creative Vision M and that's ok too. Then again I am also poor and have to rely on a VCR to tape stuff off the tv, no fancy ass Tivo for me.
