The Listening Post
Glad you’re digging it, Tokyo. Craig Finn’s songwriting is second to none; he employs a variety of techniques that you so rarely find in songwriting: not just recurrent themes but recurrent characters, places, and references that are not merely clever or pointlessly self-referential but rather more like an author who creates a single world around multiple characters across seemingly unrelated texts (think Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County, for example). Give a listen to The Hold Steady’s two best records: 2006’s "Boys and Girls in America" and 2008’s "Stay Positive". They’re among the two greatest rock and roll albums of the 21st century.Tokyo Fan wrote:With all the mentions of The Hold Steady (which I’m unfamiliar with), I’m giving it a listen now. I really like "You’re a Good Kid" and (playing as I write) "Traditional Village."

Much as I do with Jay, I pretty much think that everything Craig does is superb. Yes, ‘I Need a New War’ is fantastic.wrecking ball operator wrote:turpentim wrote:The Hold Steady - ‘Thrashing Through the Passion’ (2019)
It’s their best since 2008’s ‘Stay Positive,’ and maybe their best yet. Craig Finn’s writing is certainly as strong as ever, and the return of the horn section and Franz Nicolay on keys has the band firing on all cylinders. My album of the year so far.

Hey, Tim -- Do you dig Craig's solo stuff, too? His new one (earlier this year) is pretty nice.
