Good point, enough SF. Let's go across the bay--how about those Warriors!
:D
Actually, a trip to Pappy's is on my bucket list. Maybe Mark Olson would pop in!

Ok.California tour:

GAMH -- SFO
Catylist -- Santa Cruz
Troubadour -- LA
Coach House -- SJC
Pappys -- Desert
Belly Up -- SDGO (Week long stand)

I'm ready to road trip!

Stop propping up SFO Thrasher, especially your lobbying for Barry in the Hall.

I should have known that but drew a blank earlier. I'll have to watch the clip again to get that Spencer sighting!

Well, that's helpful.

Very cool choice of a Petty cover--one of his best. Frame's 12-string is exquisite. Hope the whole band makes a California visit soon.

Fantastic review. Thanks. Also for the link to the Petty cover. I'd Mark Spencer on stage somewhere? Not visible in the Petty cover video.

Thanks for the great wrap-up Fig. All good stuff to hear about the crowd size, vibe, energy. Hoping this means Jay keeps this lineup for future Son Volt albums and tours. He's clearly onto something with Frame and Patterson on board.

What was the Petty cover?

I have that Volt key chain/bottle opener. Great little low key Son Volt purchase.

Just returned from one of the strongest Electric Volt shows I've ever seen. Show was at the newly repurposed Washington's club in Fort Collins, home of Colorado State University. Best possible kind of place to see a show--big room where everyone can stand, good sight lines, nice, roomy bar in the foyer, friendly vibe. Cool as hell light show throughout the show. Nice, nice place.

BIG crowd for the show--650-750 enthusiastic fans: CSU profs and grad students, Denver residents who'd driven up for the show, a few teens with cool dads, and lots of farmers and ranchers with mesh hats advertising farm implements.

Jay was clearly pumped to have the good crowd--my sense is that he prefers these rooms to festivals (recall last year's debacle at Coachella), wineries, or any kind of sit down theater, at least for the full band shows. Early on he said, "it's great to be back on the Front Range!" which elicited whoops of appreciation. Jay is at home with his fellow flatlanders...

Band was tight as hell. They played the standard set, with Windfall, a Tom Petty cover (SV could be the world's greatest Petty cover band if they wanted to be!), and the Velvet Underground cover as the encores. The NoB tunes have matured live--Sinking Down has emerged as a crowd fav (or maybe that's just me because I LOVE that tune!)

INCREDIBLE crowd energy throughout. With the possible exception of a show in Manhattan last year I can't recall a more energized crowd. Huge response to the first chords of Route and delirium for Drown. Crowd seemed well familiar with the new tunes, too. Not a soul left before the final note.

Jay was animated and in good cheer throughout. I left with ears ringing, a new SV key chain (w/bottle opener), and a renewed commitment to see this incredible band in this type of venue whenever and wherever I can. Life is good when SV is on tour...
