Guitar gurus: do any of you know how Jay and Co. get the amazing distortion/overdrive tones on Okemah?
Never known Jay to use a rat. He used an Earth Drive OD pedal when I saw him in this era thru a Fender DRRI amp

That’s right. Okemah and the Melody of Riot was Son Volt 2.
Think Brad Rice. Recorded in St Louis the second half of October
2004 & released one year later. That’s the story we’ve heard
where Jay had the studio time booked and the Boquist brothers
had some requests, maybe monetary, while Jay was over the falls
in a barrel. Jay said no and went a different direction. DuPlantis
and Brad Rice.

I stumbled across this-the recording of Gob Iron project
(A personal favorite) with Anders Parker. Jay was a busy man in those days, specifically
In 2004.
“ The songs that would become Death Songs for the Living
were recorded spontaneously during a five-day period in autumn of 2004
in Farrar's studio in St. Louis. Farrar had originally intended to record
a new Son Volt album, but that project was postponed in favor of these songs.

The songs played, with one exception of a Farrar original, were reworked versions of traditional folk songs by artists such as Rev. J. M. Gates, Stephen Foster and the Stanley Brothers. Lyrics and melodies have been altered, some almost entirely rewritten through what is sometimes referred to as the "folk process". While Farrar and Parker chose the songs on the fly, it was later found that death was a common theme running through; hence the title, Death Songs for the Living.”

That classic kickass collection wasn’t released until October 2006.

I'm playing a 335 or tele through a cranked 70's princeton (no pedals), and always end up getting a smooth texas-blues type distortion. I'm wanting to get that big, growly, loose breakup that I hear on Jay's records. Any ideas?
There isn't one answer to your question. They switch guitars a lot. Brad mainly played his Duesenberg (Ron Wood sig model) through a pedalboard into a Vox AC-30. Not sure what all is on his pedalboard. Guess I could ask, he's quite a gearhead. He also played a Les Paul on a few songs.

Jay played his Red Epi and his MelodyMaker (not sure if it's a Gibson or and Epi) through a couple pedals into •I think• a 59 Bassman RI. He used to use a Rat for distortion and since his sound is pretty consistant over the years, that's where I would start.

To get close, here's what I would do:
For Jay's sound go Tele>Rat>Prince
For Brad's try 335>Rat>Prince

The 335 won't get you a LP tone, but it'll be closer than the tele.
