I don't think of Willie when I think Gap ads. Go back and look at what I wrote and you'll see I was talking about Ryan Adams.

Jay should take the money and run. Corporations whore out everybody anyway, why not take a little of thiers while you can. Cut the holier than though shit and wake up in the real world.

Exactly. You gotta keep in mind that musicians are also business people, especially the independent musicians.

i see no problem with the vw ad. kind of cool, actually. i'd be curious to know how many people bought nick drake's pink moon (an inspiration of jay's) after it appeared in a vw ad a few years ago. it's called capitalizing, not selling out.

We all do things at work we don't like or want to do at one time or another. What Jay does is his job and he has every right to use what he does to make a living any way he chooses. Being a long time punk rock fan I've heard the cries of sell out more than once when someone's music crosses over into some form of commercialism. People can't live underground forever as we age we all have reality (family, children and jobs) to face and that takes money.

For those that think Jay did a bad thing by letting a few corporations use an instrumental song here is something to keep in mind. Jay didn't make any royalties from the Uncle Tupelo releases upon initial releases. We all know the music industry is notorious for screwing artists out of every dime they make. Who knows if he made anything from the Son Volt releases. If someone approached me and said "Can we use 30 seconds of an instrumental track that you wrote and we'll pay you a buttload of money?" I'd say yes. Especially if I had a family to raise. And as mentioned in previous posts-at least Jay isn't up there saying stupid crap like"Come on down to Mickey-D's. Love the fries, shakes, and burgers with cheese."

McDonald's too? Jesus. I felt bad enough about it being used in the damn Volkswagen ad. I remember when I heard it--it took me about five seconds to place it, then it clicked. Ugh. But at least it wasn't like "Hi, I'm Jay Farrar and I LOVE me some Volkswagens!" Still, it was kind of a letdown, especially considering how great "Chanty" is.

Dudes, that song "Chanty" was on a McDonald's commercial. MC FREAKING DONALD'S!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe Volkswagen has used it more recently.... when I heard Mickey D's using it, I about puked..... Jay would have to give approval, wouldn't he?

Agreed. To paraphrase the late, great Bill Hicks "As soon as a celebrity uses their likeness to push a product everything they do or say becomes suspect. Except Willie Nelson."

Thanks for pointing out that Volkswagon commercial... I could have SWORN I had heard that song many times before (which I have) and could swear it was a Jay Farrar instrumental song, but for the life of me could not place it....

I think instrumental music on a tasteful commercial is much different than what Ryan did... I don't think we'll see Jay Farrar on a life size poster in the window of any gap stores.... And at least Willie had a good reason.. he hasn't paid taxes in a gazillion years and it's catchin' up with him... Ryan's got no excuse....

Not to knock Jay or anything, but didn't Jay's music make an appearance in a Volkswagen commercial. Just thought you would want to know. I believe the song was Chanty from WST. And yes, I think Ryan Adams is a big dork.
